From Worry to Peace
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT)
Worry keeps me up at night. I worry about my kids, my future, our finances... the list goes on, often spiraling me into anxiety. On nights like these, I have to be intentional about reminding myself that worry does not have to have the final say.
Worry is not God's plan for us. Like most problems in life, God has given us everything we need in His Word, the Bible. Philippians 4 lays out a clear and practical plan for overcoming worry and finding peace.
4 Steps to Turn Worry into Peace
Step 1: Don't Worry
God commands it right there in verse 6: "Don't worry." Okay, but how?
Step 2: Pray
Instead of dwelling on the thoughts that are keeping you up at night or causing anxiety, pray about them. Again, in verse 6, we are commanded to pray about everything. Everything means everything. All of it. Pray about it.
Step 3: Tell God What You Need
Personally, I sometimes struggle with telling God what I need. If I'm honest, I can feel selfish or even silly asking for certain things. But God already knows what we need anyway. There is something powerful that happens in our souls when we are honest with God. When we pray the truth about what we're really feeling and wanting, we declare two things: (1) God hears us, and (2) God cares for us.
Step 4: Thank God
Thank God for what He has done. As hard as life can be, there is always something to be thankful for. Gratitude for what God has already done, along with thankfulness for His promises, shifts our focus from worry to peace.
After we have done these four steps, verse 7 gives us a beautiful promise: “Then you will experience God’s peace.” This is not merely a possibility; it is a guarantee from God. Often, we believe peace will come only when our circumstances change. We tell ourselves, “When I get that promotion, I’ll finally have financial peace,” or “When I find the right person, I’ll finally have peace in my relationships.” But God offers us peace right where we are, even in the middle of hardship, uncertainty, and messiness.
Today, you can exchange your worry for peace. Bring your concerns to God, follow these steps, and trust His promise. No matter what you are facing, God’s peace is available to you right now. It will guard your heart and mind as you place your trust in Him.
