How am I to View my Body as a Christian?
The world has made it unmistakably clear that beauty is mostly about what we look like. Even though our culture is beginning to celebrate more diversity in body types and appearances, decades of perfectly airbrushed models have trained us to believe that beauty has a narrow, rigid standard. And now, with filters and AI tools that can transform a photo in seconds, reality has become blurry. The “beauty” we see from celebrities and influencers feels more unreachable than ever.
Younger and younger teens are jumping into this world — filming “get ready with me” videos, showing off Amazon hauls, and sharing 12-step skincare routines. Appearance has become a performance, a hobby, and for many, a pressure.
What is a Christian supposed to make of all this? Can a Christian care about his or her appearance? How much is too much?
As Christians, the Bible commands us to not view ourselves the way the world does. The world will tell you to do whatever makes you feel good. “Your body, your choice.” But God’s Word contradicts this, saying our bodies actually belong to the Lord.
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, NLT
We don’t think the way the world does; not about beauty, money, success, our bodies - nothing.
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2, NLT
God created you (Genesis 1:27-28). You are His masterpiece (Psalm 139), His handiwork (Ephesians 2:1-10).
I have a daughter, and it would break my heart to hear her speak critically about herself. The thought of her looking in the mirror and believing she is anything less than precious would crush me. And just as it would grieve me to hear my daughter speak unkindly about her own body, your Heavenly Father feels the same toward you. He loves you, He delights in you, and it saddens His heart when His creation looks at itself with disappointment or disdain.
As sons and daughters of a loving King and intentional Creator, we are called to cherish the bodies He gave us. He crafted us with care, purpose, and affection. So yes — we should love our bodies exactly as God made them. But that leads to an honest question: is it possible to care about our appearance while still holding a healthy, God‑honoring appreciation for how He created us?
Absolutely.
Your body is God’s temple, and caring for it is both good and right. It’s also perfectly fine to enjoy putting on makeup or wearing nice clothes — as long as you remember that those things are simply fun extras, not the source of your worth or beauty.
To help keep your appearance in its proper place, here are some questions to reflect on:
-
Do I put on makeup because I enjoy the process or because I feel unattractive without it?
-
Am I buying these clothes because I’d like something new and special for this occasion or because I’m worried about fitting in or feeling “less than” in last year’s outfit?
-
Do I work out to care for my body so I can stay healthy and active for my family or because I fear I won’t be loved if I’m a certain size?
These questions aren’t meant to shame — they’re meant to gently guide your heart back to truth: you are already valuable, already loved, already beautiful. Everything else is just an added joy.
So let’s live in the believer’s freedom that Paul called the Corinthian church towards.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31, NIV
May our lives, including how we view and care for our bodies, be dedicated to doing it all for the glory of God.
